Start with the data plate
A pump that looks like a physical match but runs the wrong flow rate will either starve the mast circuit or overwork the relief valve. Most repeat pump failures on rental and contractor fleets trace back to this, not a bad casting or a supplier defect.
Most forklift hydraulic pumps carry a manufacturer’s data plate or label with model number, serial number and sometimes displacement. If the plate is readable, this is the fastest and most reliable identification path, write down the exact model number including any letters and numbers, since a single character difference can mean a different pump variant entirely.
When the data plate is missing or worn
Look for stamped casting numbers or codes on the pump housing itself, usually on the top or bottom of the body. These numbers identify the casting family even when the printed label has fallen off or corroded away. Some manufacturers also include a QR code that can be scanned directly.
What to photograph if you are unsure
Take clear photos of the mounting flange, the shaft and its spline count, the port sizes and their positions, and the overall pump from several angles. Send these along with the forklift’s own make, model and serial number, since the same forklift model can be fitted with different pumps depending on mast option and production year.
Why rotation direction matters
A pump’s rotation direction, clockwise or counter clockwise viewed from the shaft end, is fixed to how it was built. Ordering the wrong rotation direction means the pump will not build pressure correctly even if every other dimension matches. This detail is easy to miss and is one of the most common ordering mistakes on gear pumps in particular.
Gear, vane and piston pumps look different
Gear pumps have simple internal gear wheels and a compact body. Vane pumps use slotted rotors inside an oval chamber. Piston pumps arrange multiple pistons in a circular pattern and are generally larger and heavier for a given flow rate. Knowing which type your forklift uses narrows the identification significantly before you even reach for the part number.
Common ordering mistakes
- Ordering from the forklift chassis model alone, without checking the mast option actually fitted
- Assuming rotation direction from memory instead of confirming it on the physical pump
- Skipping a return line filter change when the old pump failed internally, which sends contamination straight into the new one
- Quoting flow rate from a general spec sheet instead of the specific pump’s data plate

How long does a forklift hydraulic pump usually last?
This depends heavily on duty cycle and fluid cleanliness, so a fixed number would be misleading. Watch for noise, slow lift speed and rising fluid temperature as signs the pump is wearing.
