Start with the component
Two products can look almost identical on a shelf and behave completely differently in service. Start with the component, a wire rope, a slew ring, a threaded fastener, and a bare hand all need something different, so match the product to the failure mode, not the aisle it happens to be stocked in.
Then think about load, motion, temperature, and whether water or salt spray is involved. For adhesives and thread lockers, cure chemistry and substrate matter as much as strength grade. Finally check what your OEM specifies. If a machine builder names an approval or a specific grade, that requirement overrides anything a general product description implies.
Wire rope lubricants and greases
Wire ropes fail from the inside out, the core and inner strands corrode before the outer wires show visible wear, so a wire rope product has to penetrate the whole rope, not just coat the surface, while resisting fling off under load.
ROCOL Wire Rope Dressing is a semi fluid dressing rated minus 30C to plus 100C with documented water and salt water resistance, applied to coat and penetrate cranes, hoists and ship hoists. ROCOL WIRESHIELD is a pseudoplastic lubricant that shears thin under motion to work into the strands as the rope runs, with over 4000 hours of stated salt spray protection, suited to submerged or static ropes. BECHEM Premium 1000 WR is a lithium and mineral oil base water resistant grease, NLGI grade 00 to 000, minus 30C to plus 120C, with a 5000 N four ball weld load, documented for crane wire ropes, ports, and open gear duty. For high heat applications, rhenus ADG 0 is a sprayable aluminium complex EP grease with graphite, rated long term to plus 200C and short term to 250C.
Crane boom and heavy duty grease
Telescopic booms and general bearings both need a grease that stays put through vibration and oscillation, and the boom side of that job usually adds salt water and impact resistance into the mix. rhenus LMN 2 is an EP lithium grease rated minus 30C to plus 120C, with MAN and Mercedes-Benz approvals stated in its TDS, suited to bearings, construction machinery, trucks and cranes. For coastal and GCC port operations specifically, salt water resistance matters more than a general EP rating, since salt laden air and spray accelerate corrosion on boom sections and slew rings faster than a general purpose grease can handle.
Thread lockers, sealants and anti seize
A thread locker, a thread sealant, and a general purpose adhesive solve three different joints, and mixing them up costs more in rework than the tube itself ever costs. Loctite 243 is a medium strength threadlocker for fasteners that need to resist vibration loosening but still come apart with hand tools during scheduled maintenance, documented alternatives include 3M TL43, Permatex 24200 and Permabond A1042. Loctite 567 is a PTFE thread sealant for pipe fittings, sealing against pressure loss rather than locking a bolt, documented alternatives include 3M PS67, Permabond LH150 and Permatex 567. Do not substitute one for the other, a threadlocker on a pipe fitting will not seal against pressure, and a thread sealant on a vibrating bolt will not resist loosening.
For threaded spindles, seals and telescopic crane booms, Berulub PAL 1 is a white adhesive, noise damping multipurpose paste with a PTFE thickener, NLGI grade 1, rated minus 40C to plus 150C. ROCOL Anti-Seize Compound is a copper based, lead free anti seize paste rated minus 50C to plus 1100C with a stated friction coefficient of 0.15, documented for seizure, galling and corrosion prevention with water and salt water resistance.
Valve lubricants for gas and frac service
Plug, ball and gate valves each hold a film of lubricant under pressure while resisting whatever is flowing past them, whether that is drinking water, sour gas, or frac fluid, and a general purpose grease does not hold up here. Lubchem Everlast 50-500 and Lubchem Fractastic H2O and WG are both documented as inhibited for H2S and CO2 service, and Everlast additionally meets the Mil-G-6032 plug valve specification. Molykote 111 Compound is a separate case, a general silicone valve and O-ring sealant with NSF 51, NSF 61, FDA 21 CFR 175.300 and BS6920 drinking water approvals, rated minus 40C to plus 204C, but it is explicitly not rated for liquid oxygen service, so do not reach for it on a gas duty valve by default.
Degreasers, contact cleaners and hand cleaners
Before you lubricate, coat or weld a component, whatever oil and residue is already on it has to come off cleanly, and that is a different job with a different safety profile from lubrication itself. VC040 Solvent Degreaser is documented for surface preparation and removing oils, grease and machining fluids with a stated 62C flash point, and its SDS separately flags an aspiration hazard with ignition and PPE precautions worth checking before use near a heat source.
For electrical work, the CFC free electro contact cleaner listed with AMS 1525B, ASTM F-519 Type 1C and MIL-PRF-29608 approvals is explicit that it should not be used on energized equipment while it is in operation, isolate the circuit first and let the surface dry fully before restart. For hand cleaning, Permatex, Gojo and Wurth all offer standard liquid workshop hand cleaners, while BIGPURE is a solvent free paste that adds skin compatible scrubbing particles for mechanical friction, useful for heavier carbon black or brake dust contamination, both still need a full water rinse to finish.
Always ask for the TDS and SDS
Two documents drive every real claim about a lubricant or grease. The Technical Data Sheet covers what the product is and where it is meant to be used, base oil or thickener, NLGI grade, temperature range, load performance, and any stated OEM approval. The Safety Data Sheet covers hazard classification, PPE, handling, storage and disposal. Ask for current TDS and SDS with your RFQ so your team can verify specifications before ordering rather than relying on a general product description.

What to send with your RFQ. Product or component, equipment type, make and model, existing product in use, part number, quantity, operating temperature, water or salt exposure, application method, and whether you need TDS or SDS attached.
Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between a wire rope lubricant and a wire rope dressing?
Both protect the rope, but a dressing like ROCOL Wire Rope Dressing is semi fluid and applied to coat and penetrate, while a pseudoplastic lubricant like WIRESHIELD shears thin under motion so it works into the strands as the rope runs. Which one fits depends on whether the rope moves constantly or sits static for long periods.
Can Loctite 243 and Loctite 567 be used on the same joint?
No. 243 is a threadlocker for fasteners that need to resist vibration loosening but still come apart with hand tools. 567 is a thread sealant for pipe fittings, built to stop pressure loss rather than lock a bolt. Use the one matched to the joint.
Are the alternative brands listed here direct equivalents?
They are documented sourcing alternatives, not confirmed drop in replacements. Cure chemistry, temperature range and substrate compatibility can differ between brands even at a similar strength grade, so confirm against your OEM specification before substituting on a critical joint or component.
