Selecting the Right Lifting Gear, Rigging & Fall Protection Guide

Rigging a load safely comes down to matching working load limit, rope construction, and fall protection to the job in front of you. Use the guidelines below to choose your hoist, your wire rope or sling, and your harness, so the lift goes smoothly and everyone on site stays safe.

      1. How to Select a Chain Hoist

The right hoist lifts the load with room to spare, not right at its limit.

      • Confirm the rated capacity. Base it on the heaviest load you will actually lift, not the average, and always leave a safety margin.
      • Choose manual or pneumatic. Manual hoists suit occasional lifts. Pneumatic hoists suit repetitive or high volume work where speed and duty cycle matter.
      • Check lifting height and speed. Match the chain length and lifting speed in meters per minute to your headroom and how fast the cycle needs to run.
      • Verify the warranty and origin. Ask what standard the hoist is tested against and how long the warranty runs from the bill of lading date, not just from the spec sheet.

      2. How to Choose Wire Rope and Slings

Wire rope and slings are only as strong as their weakest connection point, so construction and inspection both matter.

      • Match construction to the application.
        • Non rotating, compacted wire rope suits precise lifts and smoother spooling on winch drums.
        • Preformed, lubricated rope reduces internal stress and extends service life.
        • Flat eye web slings suit fast rigging where the sling needs to sit flush under the load.
      • Confirm the maximum breaking load and safety factor. Compare the MBL against the working load limit your job requires, and never load a rope or sling anywhere near its rated maximum.
      • Match eye style to hardware. Sewn eyes on Type 3 slings are designed for hooks, hoist rings, links and shackles, so check compatibility before you order.
      • Inspect before every use. Read the safe working load on the label, and retire anything with cuts, abrasion, or damaged stitching straight away.

      3. How to Choose a Fall Protection Harness

A harness only works if it fits the task and the person wearing it, so fit and certification come first.

      • Match the harness to the task. Fall distance, rescue needs, and how much freedom of movement you need all shape the right choice.
      • Check the D rings. A dorsal D ring takes the force of a fall. A sternal D ring helps with positioning or rescue.
      • Confirm certification. Look for CE, OSHA, or ANSI approval, and make sure the rated capacity covers the worker’s weight plus tools and equipment.
      • Inspect and maintain. Check straps, buckles and stitching regularly, and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and retirement guidance.

Not sure how to translate any of this to a specific part number? Send us your equipment brand and model and we’ll match it for you.
